What is NZKGI?

NZKGI was established as part of the industry restructure in 1993 to represent kiwifruit growers and give growers their own voice in industry and Government decision making. NZKGI was formed following the downturn in the kiwifruit industry in the early 1990’s to give growers their own organisation to develop a secure and stable kiwifruit industry. NZKGI is committed to retaining the SPE (single point of market entry) to the benefit of all growers.

NZKGI's Grower Forum consists of 25 Regional and District Representatives and 13 Industry Group Representatives. Forum members are elected every three years by all kiwifruit growers via a postal ballot, with the next election being held in March 2013. The Forum members in turn elect a President, Vice President and Executive Committee.

Neil Trebilco is NZKGI’s current elected President (elected December 2012) and members on the Executive Committee are Debbie Robinson, Lesley McKenzie, Mike Smith and Mike Chapman (Chief Executive).

NZKGI Strategic Plan

NZKGI reviewed its Key Projects for the 2011/2012 year and these projects were approved by NZKGI's Annual General Meeting held in July 2011 and has updated its strategic Plan with these new projects.

NZKGI has retained the mission (our purpose or why we exist) “to represent, protect and enhance the comemrcial and political interests of New Zealand kiwifruit growers”.

Our vision is to develop “A strong grower organisation that demonstrates industry leadership in which growers and other industry particiapants actively participate”

Key focus area for NZKGI are:

  • Membership
  • Advocacy
  • Communication
  • Credible Voice
  • Retention of the Single Point of Entry.

The vision and mission are underpinned by a set of values governing the operation of NZKGI and its conduct or relationships with ZESPRI, Suppliers, Government, Employees and other stakeholders. These are:

  • Selflessness
  • Ethics
  • Objectivity
  • Professionalism
  • Analysis
  • Leadership

Also included are a set of 10 guiding principles which will act as a guide when evaluating industry initiatives to ensure we are acting in the best interests of growers.

The plan has been summarized in a one page document to facilitate communication and can be displayed prominently for all growers/NZKGI members. A copy is available for download by clicking on the following link. If you have any questions/comments please contact NZKGI.

How is NZKGI involved in Industry Decisions?

The Grower Forum meets eight times a year and all growers are welcome to attend. The Forum gets briefings from ZESPRI and Suppliers and debates issues affecting the Industry.

NZKGI are also involved with the Green, Gold and Organic Development Groups where growers have strong input in discussing issues and developing new ideas and initiatives to take each category forward.

These meetings are a central hub for the debate and formation of a “NZKGI/Grower View”. These views are then tabled at the meetings of the Industry Advisory Council (IAC), the Supply Chain Committee (SCC) and the Industry Supply Group (ISG). NZKGI represents growers at these meetings.
