Orchard hazards and Eurofins sampling

The Eurofins 2018 Health and Safety On Orchard (External Reference) and stop sampling procedures were published in November last year following consultation with the industry (the documents can be accessed here). This week (26.02 –  02.03.2018) Eurofins samplers have visited many orchards as part of the Zespri initiated week 9 monitoring round and the stop sampling process has been initiated this season to date on ten orchards mainly due to long grass. The key hazards that may trigger the stop sampling process are:

  • A significant amount of hard fruit on the ground for foot sampling
  • Long grass over 30cm (this includes the headland areas where samplers need to access)
  • Collapsed structures preventing a representative sample being collected
  • Spraying
  • Curtains that cannot be safely lifted by the sampler
  • Reflective mulch – depending on the quality of its application and the likelihood of holes in the ground under the mulch
  • Large, deep or multiple holes
  • Loose wires, guy wires, tee pee strings, nooses at row ends or through canopy
  • Aggressive/violent growers/orchard contacts or contractors
