Mātiki Minecraft
Mātiki Minecraft is an interactive Minecraft Education world designed to introduce students to New Zealand’s primary industries through immersive, curriculum-aligned learning. Developed by Sow the Seed, HATA, Agribusiness in Schools and Museograph, it is set within Totara Estate in Ōamaru, the historic site of New Zealand’s first frozen meat export in 1882.
Created for Year 7 – 10 learners, the experience supports Science, Social Science, and junior Agricultural and Horticultural Science pathways. It brings together seven key primary industries, including beef, sheep, kiwifruit, arable, dairy, pipfruit, and forestry within a single interactive environment, featuring the first ever kiwifruit designed in Minecraft.
The programme is structured around six learning themes: innovation, science, history, knowledge, creativity, and challenges. Students engage in scenario-based tasks that invite them to design and test their own agricultural solutions, such as virtual fencing systems and drone technologies, within a stimulated farming landscape.
A supporting teacher website provides access to the world and multi-level cross-curricular unit plans designed to integrate Mātiki Minecraft into classroom programmes. Content is aligned to key industry partners, including NZKGI, Beef + Lamb NZ, DairyNZ and more, linking learning tasks to real primary sector careers and the people behind them.
Mātiki Minecraft is designed to make the primary industries tangible, relevant and engaging for young learners, building understanding of how food and fibre systems work and the diverse careers that sit within them.
