The submission expresses:

  • Concern that reporting is administrative and doesn’t really address the real issues; regulators must be able to respond effectively to reported cases of exploitation and modern slavery; and we have advocated consistently for regulators to be better resourced.
  • Concern that compliance obligations will be passed down to small entities at the bottom of supply chains (ie growers), and;
  • There may be multiple entities in a supply chain that meet reporting thresholds so there’s risk of duplication of everything.
  • As a general statement, corporates are already aware of their social responsibilities and have good systems in place. The real risks for modern slavery lie in largely unregulated industries, and the Bill fails to address the real risk areas.
