In February 2025 , NZKGI and Māori Kiwifruit Growers Manatōpū (MKGM) submitted on the Gene Technology Bill.
Our submission supported the potential benefits of gene technologies while calling for a more cautious, customer‑aligned approach. The submission highlighted the value placed on GMO‑free products in key markets and raises concerns that exempting gene editing from regulation could undermine transparency and consumer trust. We recommended that all gene technologies, including gene editing, be subject to clear oversight and reporting, ensuring innovation can progress without compromising market expectations or long‑term sustainability.
