To work in New Zealand, you must have an IRD (tax) number.
If you are a New Zealand resident, you must complete an IR595. Click here to download a copy of the form.
For non-residents, to get your IRD number, complete the online form here. Once you submit your registration, IRD will review it and if approved, IRD will send your IRD number within 2 working days by text or email, followed by a letter within 12 working days.
If you require support in filling in the form and are in the Tauranga area, you can speak to the IRD at their office at 306 Cameron Road, Tauranga. Standard processing time for a paper IRD application is 10 working days, but if it is urgent, the IRD can process it within two working days.
You can work without an IRD number; however, your employer must tax your pay at 45% until they receive it. So, it pays to get your IRD number as quickly as possible
