EDUCATION

It is estimated the industry will need another 2,000 permanent employees and 4,000 seasonal employees within the next few years. This future growth is dependent on the ability to attract and retain young people who are highly skilled and enthusiastic and develop them to become our industry’s future leaders.

Since Future Leaders was formed in 2014, the membership base has grown to over 180 active members. Anyone associated with the horticulture industry can join Future leaders, however; those who would like to see what sort of career opportunities exist within the horticulture industry are also welcome to join.

Events are usually free to attend and are always an excellent opportunity to get together with other like-minded people and learn about the horticulture industry and associated primary industries while giving the members an opportunity to rub shoulders with existing industry leaders.

Some of the previous events have included:

A morning with Mike King
Future Leaders (in association with NZKGI & Zespri) hosted “A morning with Mike King”. Over 200 attendees were there as Mike shared his very personal story and his work with mental illness and suicide prevention.

Zespri Chief Executive Update on AGM debrief and Season Update
Always a popular event, Dan Mathieson gave the Future Leaders a debrief on the 2019 AGM and season update. Dan shared some of his personal insights and thoughts on being an effective leader.

Annual Quiz night
Now in its third year, this popular event brings challenges the industry to go “head to head” to see who has the best quiz team. Fun, banter and plenty of laughs are guaranteed in this annual event. The winning team takes home the trophy and title of “the best of the best”.

Self-Development Workshops
Future Leaders regularly host self development workshops to develop key leadership skills to create greater engagement, participation and performance in the workplace.
