Hi-Cane Factsheet: Scientific Evidence

In the lead up to the recent Hi-Cane hearing, new scientific evidence was found which supports the continued use of the spray. Some of this new evidence has been summarised into a factsheet on how Hydrogen cyanamide can be safely sprayed to protect people outside of the sprayed area (bystanders) and the wider environment.

The purpose of this factsheet is to support growers in conversations with their neighbours on the topic.

  14. EPA (May 2024) Paragraph 4.65 of the decision says that based on the weight of evidence presented by submitters, the committee concluded that, with controls in place, the risks to in-field soil organisms from the application of hydrogen cyanide are negligible. https://www.epa.govt.nz/assets/FileAPI/hsno-ar/APP203974/APP203974_20240523_Final-Decision.pdf
  15. NuFarm (2024) While the new controls take effect immediately, the new label requirements take effect from 1 July 2025. The DMC stated in paragraph 4.49 of the decision that it is important that users of Hi-cane are informed of the updated risks and requirements during this transitional period (See para 4.49 of the decision). Nufarm has therefore produced additional information for users which lists all of the controls until the labels are updated.
