Information for Critical Business registration
How do I register as a Critical Service?
A business can self-assess if they meet the criteria for being critical. To do this go to the Business New Zealand Covid Information webpage to register on the Close Contact Exemption Scheme Critical Services Register.
To help a business register, the steps to follow have been set out below:
To start the registration process, you will need to answer two questions to test your critical service eligibility.
If you answer yes to both of these questions, you will receive the following message
Click on the ‘Register for critical status’ link. This will take you through to the registration process
- Estimated time to complete the registration takes around 15 minutes
- The form will time out after 60 minutes of inactivity
- You can save progress and complete it later
Business Connect Registration
To register on the Close Contact Exemption Scheme Critical Services Register you will need to complete a Business Connect Registration. To do this, you will need a RealMe login.
Once you have logged in, you will be directed to Business Connect. You will be asked to verify your email. Entered the email you used to create your log in. If the verification email has not been sent after 10 minutes, try these troubleshooting steps
- Do the obvious – check the spelling of email address
- Add the Business Connect email to your safe sender emails
- If the above doesn’t work, change your email in the My Details section (this is a workaround from Business Direct)
Once you are verified, go to the Dashboard and click on the Close Contact Exemption Scheme Register:

Your business must have an NZ Business Number (NZBN). You can apply for a number here. The above field is predictive. If you don’t know your number, start typing your business name and it will prefill (if you are registered).
The next screen will take you through to your business details where you will need to add in the following:
- Address
- How many employees your business has
- Business contact details
The next screen asks about the primary business activity. The options have been selected to show what you should tick:
The critical business purpose screen is where you set out why your business should be deemed critical.
The next screen asks for your worker details:
Next, you are required to complete the declaration to say what you have entered is true and correct and that’s it.
