ENVIRONMENTAL AND POLICY

In 2021 the EPA initiated a reassessment (review) about whether Hi-Cane could continue to be used in New Zealand, or whether to change the rules for using it. The EPA reviews hazardous substances when they are concerned about negative impacts on human health and/or the environment.

The EPA initially proposed phasing out the use of Hi-Cane from New Zealand. A ban would have had a massive negative impact on the kiwifruit industry and New Zealand exports.

NZKGI led the industry’s response to the EPA review. We provided considerable evidence about the impact a ban would have had on the industry. Further, we provided scientific evidence that it is safe to use.

In 2024 the EPA completed the review. Hi-Cane was not banned. It is still able to be used in New Zealand, but there are new rules in place for using it.

NZKGI’s submission on the Hi-Cane reassessment is available here.

More information about the Hi-Cane reassessment and the new rules is on the EPA website, Hydrogen cyanamide reassessment | EPA.
