The target of the external relations portfolio is to build on community and local government relationships whilst being the advocate for kiwifruit growers on wider issues such as health and safety and resource management.
Birds on Orchards
The soft young leaf and flower buds on kiwifruit orchards are an attractive food source for some bird species during spring. These birds can quickly destroy buds, causing extensive damage that can affect yields and result in the loss of revenue. While there is variation from orchard to orchard, we know that birds can destroy entire crops if not managed.
Bird Scaring Options
Having an effective bird control programme in place is an essential part of orchard management.
Birds are very clever and will quickly become desensitised to any one form of control, so effective management requires constantly adapted, integrated management techniques. Bird scaring options include audible bird scaring devices, reflective tape, kites, and balloons, intensive sward planting, laser bird scarers and agrichemical bird repellents such as Flock Off. The repellents used make the buds unattractive to the birds without affecting their health.

Audible Bird Scaring Device Rules
District plans across New Zealand have different rules for audible bird scaring devices.
Grower Resources
NZKGI and HortNZ have produced a guidance document for kiwifruit growers using audible bird scaring devices (primarily gas guns) in the Whakatāne District. This document describes the rules, how the noise monitoring is to be carried out, and how growers can check that the noise from their device is compliant.
Guidance for Kiwifruit Growers using Audible Bird Scaring Devices
NZKGI has created a brochures with talking points to help growers discuss with ABSDs with their neighbors. If you would like a physical copy(ies), please contact the NZKGI office here.
Zespri has produced a letter template that growers can provide to their neighbours to advise them why they need to use an audible bird scaring device, how long they intend to use it for and who they can contact.
Bird Control Notification letter – draft
Some district councils including Whakatāne District Council require growers to place a legible notice on the road frontage of the property where the device is being used, giving the name, address and contact phone number of the person responsible for the device. Zespri has produced a template for growers in the Whakatāne District. This should be printed at A3 size. Growers in other districts who are required to have a legible notice or signage should check with their district council regarding the type and size required.
